Those fine and expensive instruments was used mainly for reicoinesence and observation. Some of them like the OLA have been used a lot for directing artillery fire and giving the position of the target. They have all been extremely expensive to produce, but very much like modern computers they have lost most of their orignal value. However extremely well made instruments from a time when radar and sattelites not existed so they had to rely on optics. The mounted binoculars are almost useless today as they are heavy and clumsy, but we are more interested in those than in other instruents so those are a favourized part of the collections. |
