Conflict is unfortunately a central part of the human nature. Even to this day it's proved in many parts of the world, like Palestine, Jugoslavia, South America etc. As mostly people use to say it never can happend here and the last war have been and the military is just costly and of no use. The problems in nortern Ireland are very unfortunatley proving the opposite and personally I find the Irish History fazinating..
Woman (IRA member) firing with Armalite rifle during the truobles in the 70th. Even though we live in a civilized western world and we belive that what happend in the 30th and 40th not can happend today. Europeans of the same basic religions fighting and killing each others of no reason. The types of firearms used by The Royal Ulster Constabulary very much shows how difficult and hard the conflict is and have been for a very long time. It's probably the only policeforce in the western world that have used armoured cars with belt feed machineguns and heavaly fortified policestations with mounted machineguns. And that is an interesting fact while the rest of the policeforeces in Brittain is mainly unarmed.
Armoured car in Belfast 1922 The solution of the problems in the North as well as other places is very difficult as the hate is so rooted in people. Personally I belive that the only way of reaching somewhere in this matter is to have a very good education, as educated people probably not is so easaly are affected by the religion and nonsence talk. Another extremely important part is probably the social classes, not a socilist by any means but it gains nobody that large amount of people are looked out from the jobs and the social life. It's has also been quite common that criminals find their ways into terrorist organisations and get leading positions within them. It's therefor very important that the society have a working way to take care of such problems and not accept criminals getting convicted 20 or 40 times.
Checkpoint by military and police in Ulster around 1990. The policemen are carrying Ruger AC-556 rifles and Ruger Revolvers. On the Firearms side they have in the past mainly used brittish military guns such as Lee-Enfields and Webley and no until during the seventies went over more and more to other firearms than ex. military. Up to its disbandment 4th of November 2001 the major firearms was Ruger .357 revolvers and H&K MP5 submachineguns. |
